Mt. McKinley's West ButtressDenali National Park, Alaska
Towering over the 600 mile long Alaska Range at over 20,000 feet, Mt. McKinley is a mountain to be reckoned with. Every year approximately 1,000 or more climbers make an attempt for the summit and about 50 percent are successful. Named by the native Athabascans as Denali, Mt. McKinley has attracted explorers since the 1800’s, many of whom made attempts at the summit. The first successful attempt was achieved on June 7, 1913 by Stuck, Harper, Tatum, and Karsten. An incredible feat considering more than 50 percent of the mountain is covered in snowfields and glaciers in excess of hundreds of feet thick.
